An antique song has a lyric that says, "If it wasn't for our problem, we wouldn't know that God could solve them."
Charles Spurgeon explains:
I believe the hard heartest, most cross grained and most unloving Christians in all the world are those who have not had much trouble in their life. And those that are the most sympathizing, loving and Christlike are generally those who have the most affliction.
"The worse thing that can happen to any of us is to have a path made too smooth.
One of the greatest blessings the Lord ever gave us was a cross."

I believe (from experience) that Spurgeon is right...the most compassionate, loving people are those that have suffered in the past. Along the same lines, those that are most merciful and forgiving are those that recognize their own need for mercy and forgiveness. "She who was forgiven much loves much, but she who was forgiven little loves little". People who haven't been there, who haven't suffered, who haven't "blown it big time", don't believe or understand that it could have been them...
If we stop to think of the most sinful, seemingly hopeless case we know, remember, one or two bad choices and we could be right there with them.
