Rick Warren on Susan Boyle

I am not a Warrenite...which is not to say I don't agree with a lot of what he writes. But he hits it out of the proverbial park with this (I apologize in advance if an advertisement comes on that rubs you the wrong way; I couldn't find another way to publish this:

I couldn't agree more. I cannot imagine anyone not having the same thought I did when I saw her walk out on stage. That is something akin to "Oh boy, this is gonna be bad." It is a real wakeup call to all of us. Truly man looks at the outer appearance and God looks at the heart.

I'm not a fan of Warren either. However, he is right on here.

When I saw this video for the first time, my thoughts went immediately to what I believe is the most glaringly obvious lesson to be learned:

Never tell God "It's too late for me"!

It made me think of the movie "Sea Biscuit", the story centered around a champion horse who was never given the opportunity to be the champion he truly was, until it was "too late". In fact, he was used to train other, slower horses; his talents were never recognized until after he was "too old" to run for the Triple Crown... it was only THEN, and against all odds, that he beat the Triple Crown winner!
Seabiscuit's victory inspired and impassioned the whole country (which was in the throws of the Great Depression at the time), in much the same way as what we saw happening with Susan Boyle (oh, and let's not forget Paul Potts, by the way, another member of the "it's not too late" club!)

I think there is something profound to be gleaned from these examples. God is telling us something. Yes, don't judge by outward appearances... but also (and maybe, to me, just as important), don't tell God your time has passed. It's not up to us to dictate how or when he will cause our dreams to unfold. It's up to us to be faithful with the talents and gifts He has given us for His purpose, for His timing, and His Glory!

Oh, that I could hold on to this, Lord...
